THE CIRCLE OF SECURITY PARENTING™

Weekly Online Meetings from February 28, 2024

Sometimes children’s behavior creates feeling of confusion, frustration, and disconnection in caregivers. Those feelings can cause parents to wonder what is wrong with the child, or with the parent.  Parenting can feel like we are making things up as we go along, and we wonder if we are getting it right.

Circle of Security Parenting is an 8-week program that puts together a small group of caregivers to reflect on their strengths and struggles in parenting.  In the time span of 8 weeks, participants meet with the facilitator once per week for 2 hours to review the content of the material and engage in group reflection.

Circle of Security is an attachment-focused program, helping caregivers learn how to respond to the needs of children in a way that enhances connection.

The program helps parents promote feelings of security and confidence in the relationship so children can explore, learn, grow, and build positive relationships.  The program is based on decades of research in helping caregivers build a stronger bond with their children.

About the Facilitator

Sarah Bernhardt, MA, LIMHP, LMPH, LPC has been a level 2 COSP facilitator for the past nine years. She has facilitated over 25 COSP over the years and is excited to share COSP with the community.

Sarah shared “what I love about facilitating Circle of Security Parenting groups is bearing witness to the a-ha moments participants have throughout the course.  One of the quotes from training that remains with me is “the degree to which the child’s behavior makes sense to the caregiver, the child will be securely attached”.  As a parent, I experienced moments when I did not understand the behavior of my children, and my connection to them suffered.  Circle of Security helps provide a map that a caregiver can use to understand their child’s behavior.  By the end of the course, caregivers report feeling less stressed about parenting and feeling like they can support their children in their needs.  Difficult behaviors in children often decrease because caregivers know how to support security in their children.  Caregivers often end the course with an awareness of how their upbringing has impacted their parenting, giving them more choices in parenting differently.   This is some of my most impactful work as a therapist to facilitate parenting changes in families for generations to come.”
